layout update 4/11/10
April 11, 2010
I have officially ran an engine around the new 4 by 8 addition on the layout as people who whatch my youtube viedos know. In the video the front truck came off because of a meesed up track joint, I have now fixed that and have started scery around it! I made a rock formation in the corner of the addition out of foam and last night put some plaster on it for texture and I also completed some smaller rock formations in the same area to blend in the bigger one. I have not run anything around the loop (trainwise) because of a tight curve I can easily ajust but just havn't gotten to it. If you want more frequent updates in video form you can check out my utube account. My username is schul4 and there is a link on the homepage.

I did alot today as last seen in my latest YouTube video! I started with the roadbed only expecting to finish that and I ended doing half of the track also!! I will make and update video on YouTube next weekend If I finish the loop. Track laying and scenery are my favorite parts of the hobby as well as operating!

A Day on the BNSF Railway
March 16, 2010
I just finished making episode 3. The series started last march and I only came out with 2 episodes. They were popular for a little bit but since I have DCC now, things run smoother which makes for better video. I also this time added some of my own commentary. It will be on Utube on March 17th! Enjoy!!!!

Easement curves, by Dave Emery from the Model Railcast Show
February 21, 2010
Dave Emery: The idea of an easement is, as the name implies, to ease your way into a curve. That's true vertically (i.e. with the superelevation) and horizontally. Consider 18" radius snap track: You go from tangent right into that sharp curve. If you introduce a piece of maybe 22" radius at either end of the curve, the trains run -much- better, since they don't lurch right into a sharp turn. In both cases, the idea is to start out less sharp and build your way into the middle/sharpest point. A good rule of thum.
The mathematics for railroad easements is a bit complicated and of course takes more space than we can give up on the layout. But anything you do here helps. For flextrack, if you connect the two tangents of the curve, the flextrack will tend to assume a natural easement. Charlie, a pragmatic way to tackle easements is to first set your minimum radius, e.g. 18". Buy a couple of pieces of snap track at that radius. Then when planning a significant curve, place the pieces of 18" snap track in the middle of the curve. Push them "out" a bit so that the 18" curve doesn't...

February 9, 2010
I have a snow day today, we are going to get 14in!! sadly I will not be railfanning because like everyone else, my mom does not like to drive in the snow unless she has to. I also have to snowblow 4 driveways later once it gets light out.

NCE Powercab review
February 7, 2010
NCE's Powercab is a great beginner begginner DCC system for small to medium sized layouts. When I first opened it up and took it all out of its nice packaging. All it is is the plug in panel, the throttle and 2 different types of cords. Setup took me 5 minutes, screw the wires to the track into the plug-in panel, plug in the power cord to an outlet, and plug in the throttle to the panel. Programming is also extremely easy and the manual covers that extremely well the same for consisting. Anothere great thing is the price. For the price is worth it. If you are wondering what the difference is between the Powercab the Procab is this, the Powercabs throttle is the whole system and gets the engine numbers while the Procabs box that you can put under the layout does that. Plus the Procab is more for really big layout like club layouts. Also on the Power cab you can't unplug it. The Procab, you can unplug and plug back in anywhere around the layout and won't lose the last engine number you were on. Otherwise it is an extremely well working and easy to use...
